Lake Gaston

Lake Gaston

The water temp on Lake Gaston is in the mid seventies. The bass fishing is still great and the crappoe are now starting to move deeper. With all the tournament action on Beautiful Lake Gaston, this is making the bass go into what seems to be sleep mode on the weekends. But the weekdays are fishing well. The lizard bite will not be as strong as it was in April because the spawn is moving out but now is the time to start cranking points on Gaston. The grass has always been the problem when it came to using a crankbait on Gaston and this year will probally produce the same issue but keep looking for those oppurtunites to crank because it can be deadly on Gaston. The lack of cranking that goes on on Gaston is what makes it son good. Most crankers hate Gaston because they can’t crank in the areas they typically like to crank because of the grass. Don’t give up on this great fish catching technique so quickly. The set up is part of the task. I use 10 pound test line and a 7 1/2 foot Lou Lewis Custom Cranking rod. The average depth on gaston is 20 feet. Of course there are some places that are much deeper.  Making contact with the bottom is key and long cast and light line is waht helps you to do that. Look for points that offer a rocky bottom there won’t be much grass growing on rock and you wl find bass where thr rock meets the grass. A carolina rig will work for tis as well.
